NGSS Science Lesson: Capacity

This year, New Jersey adopted the NGSS standards for Science, changing the curriculum across all grade levels. In 1st grade, we studied capacity and used our new materials to learn about them. One lesson was using safe scoopers to see how many scoops filled a measuring cup and then discussing WHY we might have gotten different answers:

- Did you fill your scooper up all the way?

- Did you have a consistent amount each time you scooped?

These were questions we explored and journaled about before exploring standard measurements. The students really enjoyed being exposed to the concept of capacity in this fun way :)
