Let's Go to the Supermarket

This past school year, teaching awareness of coins and their values was part of the first grade curriculum. As an assessment when the mini unit ended, I was inspired by some ideas I found and had all of my students create their own supermarkets. Here is what you need:

- large piece of construction paper

- Supermarket coloring page

- eight price tags on copy paper

- eight food items on copy paper (make sure they can be pasted inside the tags)

- markers, scissors, and glue

I gave out the supplies one by one in the order I desired the students to complete the project. This is totally the teacher's discretion based on the level of independence of your students.

I also allowed them to create the inside of their supermarket any way they had imagined it to look. Because we were learning about coin value, I asked them to please keep the prices of all items under $2.00 and to make sure each item had a unique price. Here is the end result for one of my students:
